Q; Do you feel like you have left a mark in history, if so, how?
A: You know, I had to really think about this question, then I thought about what it means to leave a mark on history, so I looked it up & it says, to have a lasting effect on another person or thing. I would like to think I have left a footprint in history. Since 2004 I have been the owner of Salon Lauren in Washington Twp, NJ. During that time, I have been blessed to employ about 15 staff members, and in my business, the turn around rate of staff has a continuous revolving door. However, because I do not just employ staff, I invest in them & their clients & I get to know them and their family’s as well. I believe I have been able to keep each staff member for an extended period of time because as I mentioned, I pour into my staff & they pour into me & my family as well and together we have impacted our clients, the community through the outreach we’ve done together and each other. I believe that myself & the Salon Lauren Team have had a lasting impact on each other & the community. That is a lot of lives & time that have been touched by a dream that I had back in high school.
Q: How did you persevere through the tough times?
A: I keep a positive attitude and I pushed my way through. You cannot succeed with a give up mentality.
Q: What do you want to achieve next?
A: I would love to build my business to the next level by building my team/staff so we can offer more!
Q: Describe your leadership style and how you “lead” others.
A: Honestly, I do not see myself in that fashion. I see myself as an equal. But I feel when you treat people equally, it benefits you both. It also creates a much better working environment.
Q: What are the benefits to having women in leadership?
A: Men and woman definitely think differently. When working with people you come across all personalities and outlooks. As times change, we need to as well. We should not be held back.
Q: Have you ever been so discouraged you wanted to quit?
A: At times, yes! But who hasn’t?!?
Q: What are the ways you stay grounded and take care of yourself?
A: My faith is a huge factor in everything I do. I try my best and do my best to achieve this through prayer, exercise and taking the time for myself
Q: Who was/is your role model and/or leadership mentor?
A: The previous owner sold the business to me, and I would say, while I was employed by her for 9 years, she created a unique and fun workplace and I strive to continue the to do the same as the new owner.
Q: What advice would you give to the next generation of female leaders?
A: Never give up. We need to keep striving for our equality to men, diversity, and empowerment!
